About State Standards for Third Grade
The 2010 Report Card Conf. Schedule
is here. Use it to check your times or make adjustments. E-mail me of any
changes you need to make.
HOW TO SEND MONEY TO CLA$$:
Any money sent to our classroom needs to be
placed in an envelope labeled with name of student and purpose for which it will
be used.
WHAT OUR STUDENTS USE [ALMOST] EVERY DAY IN CLASS:
Student Planner (supplied by teacher on first day)
paperback dictionary
sharp pencils with erasers ("Pop-a-Points" are fine IF AND ONLY IF the writing produced is good and dark.)
required texts and assignments
wide-ruled, standard-size, loose-leaf notebook paper. Stored in binder.
quadrille graph paper (3-hole punch); stored in binder
pocket folder to organize and protect papers (supplied by teacher first day)
PAPER BASICS
For Language Arts, Social Studies and Science
Wide-ruled, loose-leaf notebook paper (see above)
NO PAPER TORN OUT OF A SPIRAL NOTEBOOK! NO PAPER FROM ANY TYPE OF A "PAD"!
For Math
Quadrille paper for math. This is a special
size graph paper that helps students to better line up math problems by place
value and to calculate more accurately. This paper is generally available at
school, but we use a lot.
Reading Homework
Students will be assigned their choice of independent reading novels from the Accelerated Reader list. They are expected to read these novels each night, then take an Accelerated Reader Test upon completion, earning an 80% or better score. A Reading Commitment needs to be made for each book and a weekly Reading Log should be completed for each week's reading. The Reading Commitment is the student and parent's plan which insures that the chosen book is read in a timely manner. Only a 500+ page book should require three weeks.
How to Get in Touch
Feel free to contact me by e-mail. I try to get back to folks as soon as possible, but sometimes I
get home waaaaay late. I will reply, but there might be a lag! Also,
feel free to send a note with your child (I generally can't get to the notes
until after school), or call the office and have them leave a note in my
box.) Wednesday, after school, is my tentative "office time." The
worst time to catch me is in the morning. I need that time for last-minute
preparations and to meditate a few moments before the new day begins.

Archaeological Dig Assistants for Dig Day (Date TBA) This job requires purchasing strata materials and loading up our dig boxes, strata by strata, salting them with appropriate artifacts.
Filing Help (Random acts of goodwill!) I generally have many papers needing to be filed away. (One good thing about this tedious and boring job is that you can sit in a chair and do it.) I usually have the to-be-filed materials in one folder just waiting for a kind volunteer to enter my lair.
Media Lab assistants (schedule is TBA) If you're proficient with MS Word, Excel, or our graphic programs, and are willing to help, you will be welcomed with open arms.
